Ass Kicking to a New Level

This week I visited Bangkok – the reality was for my pre-birthday celebration I got dinner and a movie treat from my dearest wife. Dinner was Thai food and the movie was “Ong Bak.” It was either watch Hitch or Ong Bak – I choose Ong Bak over Will Smith in chick flick - Hitch. Being an “action loving dood” who does like the occasional chick flick like my all time favorite “Love Actually,” Ong Bak was awesome.

To sum it up in work word – Tony Jaa puts the ass in ass kicking. This guy puts Van Dam, Steven Segal and Jackie Chan to shame. Some may say better than Jet Li but I know Jet Li is really trained in the arts and can actually hurt someone bad. But after watching Tony and the combination of Muay Thai – I never knew you could kick ass in so many cool ways. Seriously don’t take my word for it just and go watch it. Remember: Ass Kicking to a New Level. (PS: If it is Oscar you want go watch that movie Clint Eastwood directed - Very Important -- if you want to see an Oscar this is not it - go else where). Seriously this movie will “put some hairs on your chest” famous Indian movie dialogue.

Political protest on the war on Iraq - comes to Sactown

"Their first sign read "Your tax dollars at work." When that was torn down, they raised another soldier's uniform on the house with a sign that said "Bush lied. I died." That was removed Monday by another detractor."

Vigil gets vocal in Land Park
An anti-war display draws a divided crowd of 300.
By Christina Jewett -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 am PST Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Chanting, shouting and shaking tambourines, about 300 people divided themselves evenly Tuesday night across a tree-lined street in Land Park to volley their views on war and free speech.

Television crews lit the crowd, rain soaked it and nearly a dozen police officials kept curses from escalating to punches outside the home of Virginia and Stephen Pearcy, whose provocative anti-war display - a limp soldier's uniform with signs critical of the Bush administration - has drawn national attention on talk radio, television and the Internet.

Sacramento Police Chief Albert Nájera said the protest was the largest in a residential neighborhood in recent years.

"The behavior is legal of expressing their viewpoint," Nájera said. "It's getting more and more emotional for folks. Soldiers die, and people react differently."

Even as the chief spoke, a white car cruised past with an American flag propped out the sun roof, eliciting a roar from the east side of the street where supporters of the conservative group Move America Forward had gathered.

The national spotlight on the Pearcys' house intensified last week after someone scaled the Marty Way home, pulled down the display and then fell.

The Pearcys said the "political protest art" was meant to show that U.S. soldiers have been left hanging in a war that has cost billions of dollars and about 1,400 U.S. soldiers' lives.

Their first sign read "Your tax dollars at work." When that was torn down, they raised another soldier's uniform on the house with a sign that said "Bush lied. I died." That was removed Monday by another detractor.

Siobahn Guiney, executive director of Move America Forward, which organized Monday night's vigil, said the group was formed to support U.S. troops in Iraq and to ship medical supplies and coffee to the soldiers.

"Soldiers in Iraq have seen news pictures of the effigy," said the group's co-chairwoman, Melanie Morgan.

"We want to send them a gift back - a picture of support."

At the vigil, the group's backers traded barbs with the Pearcys' supporters across Marty Way.

"We love free speech," the couple's supporters shouted.

"It doesn't love you," vigil participants replied.

Steve Shamblin of Sacramento stood in the sopping grass outside the Pearcy house and said he did not find the image of the soldier's uniform, once topped with a noose, as offensive as its detractors.

"The idea of the noose symbolizes that the soldier was hung out to dry," Shamblin said.

"Not by the citizens but by the government."

Joy Korstjens, who accompanied Shamblin, said she found it amusing that the Pearcys' silent display of dissent was met with such a roar.

"They respond with shouts, intimidation and theft," she said of opponents as Pearcy supporters chanted, "Bring them home."

One man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public, police Sgt. Justin Risley said.

Nájera said officers were seeking a vandalism warrant against a man who came forward to say he took down the uniform last week.

The Pearcys made a brief appearance in their front yard about 8:15 p.m. Stephen Pearcy said he and his wife had decided not to post a third display on the house before the vigil but told supporters, "We want you to know we'll support your right to free speech with as much vigor."

Stewart Johnson of Shingle Springs said the image pushed the limits of free speech. His voice barely carried over shouts "Bush lied."

"You see, it's working for them," Johnson said.
