Rental Hell

Alright, this summer has been a "landlord's nightmare". I've met so many flakes and people that lack simple decency. Chhimi and I have been trying to fill our 2nd rental room in our home with a nice female housemate that is drama free, mature, CLEAN, responsible, rarely have overnight guests, etc. You know, NORMAL people renting a room with a house of graduate students and working professionals.

However, all the people that have indicated an interest have been such a "bummer".

First Bad Candidate of 2004
Indian woman that basically wants to "move-in" with her husband from the Bay every single weekend. Hello! If you're paying over 2x the requested rent then maybe. What part of "rare overnight guests" do you not understand. Waste of Time #1....never extended a "rental interest to her". She seems nice...but dude...don't waste my time when it specifically spells it out for you.

Bad Candidate #2
Caucasian woman from Southern Cali. indicated interest in our rental room. Blonde, blue-eyed. Met her, showed her the place. Thought she was a good fit. But darn me for yapping too much and probably scared her off with my "Banana-Thief Story". I exteded a "rental interest to her"...she NEVER wrote back an email. OMG! What an educated "rude" person! All she had to do was write back an email that states "Thank you for your interest but I am no longer interested in renting your room."...PERIOD. Nothing much instead of just completely ignoring my email. Thank goodness I had an "expiration" on the email and moved-on.

Bad "Virtual" Candidate #3
This one moved back into town from DC area. Blah blah Blah. She wrote to me asking for a tour. I phoned her ...chat with her a little bit. Arranged a tour within the next 3 hours. Well, 10 minutes prior to the appointment, she calls and leaves a voice mail "Oh, my program of studies is in this other area and I think it's too far for me to drive. So thanks and good luck". First of all, WHY couldn't she have found out where her studies were BEFORE emailing me?! What a weirdo that you do not know where your actual SCHOOL is. Second, to cancel 10 minutes prior to an appointment is quite BAD manner. Flake! Move-On.

Bad "Virtual" Candidate #4
Another Indian woman whose family owns a grocery store within 1 hour away. Emailed me indicating interest and want to tour the property. Fine. Set up a lunch meeting because some how after-work hours was too hard for her due to "traffic". Fine. Asked her for her email address so that I can email her the direction. NO Response. Left message on her cell phone for email address. NO Response. Called her on the day of the appointment (cell phone auto redirects to voicemail), left another "expiring" message. NO Response. DUH! This one had to be one of the WORSE ones because of NO response. PERIOD. Very very rude and tactless.

Why can't people communicate honestly these days?! My schedule is bad, I can't tour that time. Sorry, it sounds really nice but I'm no longer interested. Blah Blah Blah. Is it that hard to do? I can take rejection just fine as long as it is up-front and straight-forward. But to do the 6th grade style of No Response or Being Flaky?! People, grow up and learn to manage yourselves first.
