Halloween: A Special Memory
Throughout my childhood, I have only experienced Halloween twice. It may be sad to some since a childhood should last a good 10 - 12 years from today's standards, but to me, it was two fabulous times. So let me share a little piece of me:
Halloween #1 (with my brothers)
I must have been 5 or 6 years old then. It was my first Halloween with my two older brothers. They were excited to be taking me out on my first trick-or-treat...or I was very excited. My mom dressed me up as Bugs Bunny, it wasn't fuzzy or anything like that, it came with a bugs bunny mask and a body. It was a very simple and inexpensive costume she got from Woolsworth with her hard-earned money. With our little plastic bags, off we went to get free candy. I don't recall what my brothers were wearing but I remember them holding my hands going door-to-door and telling me to say "Trick Or Treat". ...and at the very last house, a older gentleman answered his door and said "I don't have any candies for you...but here's a quarter for each of you to buy some". (yep, a quarter back then could get you like FIVE little candies!). We looked at each other and smiled under our masks. We didn't get a whole lot but we poored all our bags into individual piles and my mom checked the candies...of course I don't recall really eating the candies (probably cuz my brothers grabbed it all by then ;-)). But this was something I remember.
Halloween #2 (with my "sisters")
This time, I no longer was close to my brothers and I was a lot older. I was about 13-14 years old and was in middle school. My brother's then-girlfriend, Rhonda, decided that she was taking her little sister, Vanessa, out for trick-or-treating and would like to take me along. I don't even know what I wore as the costume but I remember being with my "sisters" and going into a very nicely decorated neighborhood for trick-or-treating. It was dark and chilly that night and all 3 of us (yep, Rhonda who was 20 something then went too) got out our pillow cases and went door to door. There was one house where the path was lit with halloween bags of candle....I've never seen that before. There was another house where it has a witch coming out of the lawn. We stayed out very late...and by the time we came home...I checked my own candies instead.
Well, as Halloween is only 2 days away....I always look forward to the trick-or-treaters coming to my house and hopefully, they will have good memories of a "frightful" night.
Happy Halloween!
